The second generation of Infiniti’s flagship luxury crossover, the QX50, has been turning heads ever since it was launched in Lebanon. The car’s long awaited makeover not only changed the way it looks, but also gave it the first-ever variable-compression-ratio turbocharged engine with 268 hp!
Having driven the last version of the first generation QX50 only a few month ago, I wasn’t expecting much of a difference under the hood. But boy was I wrong! Handling is on another level in this new car, and it just feels more balanced on corners and steep roads compared to its older sister.
Driving
Infiniti’s revolutionary VC-T engine (for Variable Compression, Turbocharged) can change how far its pistons rise in its cylinders. This basically means that the car can modify how the engine works to become more fuel efficient, all while conserving its turbo power. The result of this innovation is impressive on the road; it basically means the QX50 can give more power than its predecessors and come close to the mighty QX70, while giving drivers better handling and fuel efficiency that compares to the QX30.
Although I read some complaints about the transmission, I had absolutely no issue with it as the car was shifting smoothly at high speeds and was very responsive in manual mode. Add to that, steering is exceptionally quick and lively on corners and tough roads, while braking is on point – thus making driving and handling the car at any speed, a real walk in the park.
Comfort
The QX50 has a beautiful, roomy cabin that is perfect for a family of five. Access is simple, doors are wide and large enough for adults in the front and in the back, and the controls are generally easily found and well-placed. If there’s a downside, it’s the poor rearward visibility, (although much better than the QX30). But the rear camera and sensors easily solve this issue.
I found the car’s dashboard to be a true work of art with the double screens, and intuitive commands. It definitely is better than the rest of the cars in the QX range and makes you feel like you are driving a plane!
Design
Although the new Infiniti QX50 looks more like the QX30 and performs like the QX70, it still stands out from the pack thanks to its unique dimensions, which make it a truly versatile and compact crossover, perfect for all terrains. The Japanese automaker’s signature grill is there of course, with sporty headlights and taillights. The hood is well elevated and gives the car an aggressive look, while the alloy wheels give it a sportier look. What more could you ask for?
Verdict
If you are looking for a performant car with excellent handling and a roomy interior, yet that can easily navigate the tight city roads, the Infiniti QX50 has to be your number one choice!
