In a cosy workshop tucked away in the heart of the city, Noura Barakeh carefully sketches designs that feel more like poetry than jewelry. Each line she draws, each curve she etches into her designs, is imbued with the history, resilience, and beauty of Beirut—a city whose soul she carries into every piece. “I’m Noura, a designer at heart,” she says introducing herself with a smile, “creating jewelry that holds the spirit of Beirut—its beauty, stories, and soul—etched into every piece, to be cherished for generations” is what I love to do!
Her brand, Noura B Jewelry, is not just a business but a deeply personal project. Drawing inspiration from Beirut’s rich architectural heritage, her collections are infused with intricate details of the city’s past. She highlights the delicate geometry of “drabzeen”—the ornate iron railings that once framed the city’s balconies—and the soft curves of Beirut’s traditional arched windows. These motifs, she says, are “keepers of stories, resilience, and memory,” and form the cornerstone of her signature Elemental collection. “Through Noura B Jewelry, I invite women to connect with their own stories, to wear pieces that hold meaning,” she explains. “It’s about creating a sentimental connection between the jewelry and the person who wears it,” she adds.
But the story of Noura B Jewelry is also a story of loss, transformation, and hope. Like many Beirutis, Noura’s life was irrevocably changed by the devastating Beirut port explosion of August 2020. The catastrophic event left much of the city in ruins, causing over 200 deaths and shattering the lives of thousands. For Noura, it marked a turning point, reshaping how she viewed her art. “It felt like a part of me—and the city I loved—was shattered,” she recalls. “Yet, amidst the rubble, I found beauty in Beirut’s resilience, in its refusal to surrender.”
The explosion ignited a spark in her to create something meaningful, something that could transcend the pain. Noura poured her grief into her craft, transforming it into art. “Through Noura B Jewelry, I channel the hope and strength I saw in Beirut,” she says. Each piece she designs represents a connection—between past and present, between the city’s stories and the people who wear them. “It became my way of turning grief into art and creating a sense of unity and healing with others.”
Her pieces are more than just accessories; they are vessels of memory. To Noura, timeless jewelry is not defined by trends but by its soul. “A piece of jewelry becomes timeless when it holds a story,” she explains. “It’s not just about the design but the way it resonates with the person wearing it. Timeless jewelry evokes emotion, carries meaning, and becomes a part of someone’s story. It transcends trends and becomes a heirloom that connects generations.”
Noura’s love letter to Beirut has not gone unnoticed. Her designs have caught the attention of customers who see themselves reflected in the pieces—women who, like Beirut, balance fragility with strength, nostalgia with hope. And her message extends far beyond Lebanon. As a young Lebanese entrepreneur, Noura Barakeh’s journey is a testament to the power of creativity in the face of adversity. Her advice to others hoping to create beauty amid hardship is simple: “Let the challenges you face fuel your creativity. Adversity can be a spark for incredible transformation.”
When asked for tips on how to style her jewelry, Noura’s philosophy is refreshingly inclusive: “Let your jewelry tell your story. Layering necklaces doesn’t have to be perfect—the beauty lies in the contrast. Your jewelry should reflect your individuality. Whether it’s a bold earring, a statement ring, or a sentimental piece, choose designs that resonate with you and express you best.”
Today, Noura’s workshop is alive with the hum of creativity. Her collections continue to evolve, but the essence remains the same—a celebration of Beirut, its stories, and its people. As she delicately places the finishing touches on a new piece, she reflects on her mission: “Noura B is my love letter to Beirut—a tribute to its resilience and timeless beauty. I hope that through my designs, others can feel the same sense of hope and connection that I’ve found.”
