Heels’ Rule Book: How to pick your first Heel -Episode 3-

Picking your heels is not exactly an easy task, especially when you are still learning how to walk in them! In this third episode of the Heels’ Special Edition, we will be teaching you how to progress through your shoes selection and how to evolve from the low easy to handle heels to the sky-high stilettos!

Strutting in heels is not as hard as it might look! As long as you are ready to take it slowly and gradually; and as long as pick the highest quality heels for the situation! In the following points we will make, Belle Beirut will show you how to chose the best heels as you are learning to walk in them, how to pick the shape, the height, the center of gravity, the design, the front, and the platform of your heels!
•The nature of the heel: For the beginners, it is always preferable to pick a heel that it easy to walk in by nature; and this is defined by two main points: a large surface of contact with the floor and a fully flat platform. For those who still can’t balance on heels, a curvy platform may cause you that scene you’ve been trying to avoid since you’ve seen Miss Uruguay falling on stage!
•The shape of the heel: The less expert you are on walking with heels the more “heels” you will need. The heels of the beginners should be thicker and straighter than those of the pros. From there, you would evolve into thinner and higher heels. I would recommend you start wearing wedges for full support if you are a 0 level newby!
•The center of gravity of the heel: How the heel is curved and where is it centered does matter. For instance, the straight heel and the one that it outwardly curved a la Lady Gaga are particularly hard on beginners. Therefore I recommend you start with the heels that are inwardly curved and positioned at the center of the natural heel. When the gravity of the heel is not outwardly shifted, walking in high heels becomes much easier.
•The design of the shoes: For you first few pair of heels, I usually recommend ankle boots and peep toe booties. Providing additional contact surface with the foot means you will be more focused on getting your walk straight than having your open pump falling off! In addition to that, these designs will give you the security and the confidence through the way they limit the shoes’ movement in your feet.
•The front of the shoe: Pointed toe and capped designs are usually harder on beginners than more rounded designs, especially with all the pressure the foot receives from behind; therefore it is recommended you always start your journey with rounded fronts. The Pigalle Loubi is one of the hardest shoes to keep for more than two hours specifically because the heel is so high, and the front very pointed!
•The platform: The platform, otherwise known as your new savior, is the only formula that will allow you to wear high heels with less pain. The platform relieves lots of pressure off of the front of the foot and balances the heels. Try not to have a net difference exceeding 11 cm between your heel and platform; otherwise you will risk way more than tripping; no one, not even a super model is supposed to bend her feet this much.
Finally, fashionistas, it is important to know how to invest in your heels. The truth is, most of us tend to spend most on glam heels, the ones we tend to use very few times! This is exactly where we go wrong! Your highest quality pairs should be the ones you are wearing the most and longest, because they tend to affect your feet, legs, back and posture the most; the bearing on your health will always, “always”, come before glam! This is definitely NOT to say that suffering a little for glam is unjustifiable *Wink Wink*!! Because all suffering is acceptable considering the spring/summer 2012 shoes in the gallery we gathered for you!!
Glamorously yours;
